A Unique College in the Arizona Mountains

By: Daniel Z. Kane

Prescott Arizona. Ever hear of it? Know there's a great little college there? You don't, do you?

If you're looking for a traditional college or university, learning more about Prescott is unlikely to be a good use of your time. But, if you're intrigued about the possibility of attending a college with some pretty unique characteristics, keep reading.

What are the Prescott differences? Degree programs in areas such as ecopsychology, environmental education and interpretation, agroecology, and outdoor adventure education is one big difference (although more traditional majors are also available). Another is the availability of residency and short residency programs (at the undergraduate and graduate level).

Prescott's location, surrounded by nearly 1.5 million acres of national forest, also sets it apart, and is an ideal backdrop for Prescott's mission of creating ecological literacy.

More differences? How many colleges can you think of with as many field based classes, or average class sizes of 10 students?

What might be Prescott's biggest difference may also be the characteristic students find most exciting; a block and quarter academic calendar. The block and quarter calendar allows the college to offer fieldwork throughout the United States and the world. Because of the block and quarter, Prescott students are offered unique travel and learning opportunities.

If you like the idea of a very small college where faculty and students work collaboratively, where students have a voice in their education, and where critical thinking and ecological awareness are stressed, Prescott may be a good option for you.
