America's Endless Obsession with Hollywood

By: Jasmine Almira

Americans love movie stars - in fact, many Americans treat Hollywood movie stars with the same obsessive interest that other countries reserve for royalty. The stars are scrutinized, envied, adored, worshipped, and loved. What is it about these Hollywood icons that is so intriguing and why do spend so much time and energy devoted to uncovering the secrets of their personal lives?

Hollywood movie starts have superstar status in America. They dominate the media and the glamour world. Any doubts that one may have other wise are banished as soon as you check out the latest media reports be it television or print media. These starts are everywhere. Even fashion magazines that were primarily the domain of models have turned to these Hollywood stars to adorn their front pages. Models are there - but in the back pages. One has to wonder what is the attraction of these stars that makes them irresistible to the people?

Much of this has to do with looks and public relations skills. Many Hollywood actors are prepped and preened before any public appearances. They look flawless. Everything from their hair styles to the makeup they wear, to the designer size 0 duds on their back, it all makes many people feel inferior and in awe of the rich and famous. They have things that many of us could never dream of owning.

Also people usually are not able to separate the Hollywood actors from the on-screen personas and very often feel that they know these stars well. But no matter how many interviews you would have seen of these stars you have no idea of how they are in their real lives.

Hitting big time in Hollywood is based on good luck and pure timing. As a Hollywood actor to get yourself meaty roles you have to know the right people and be in the right place at the right time. Dazzling good looks will also go far in getting you noticed.

The same rules seem to apply to musicians. Just look at some of the multi-millionaire pop singers and ask yourself how many of them are truly musicians (can they sing or play an instrument)? Considering the frequent accusations of lip-synching, it appears that not many have the talent. It's unfortunate that looks have become more important than talent in establishing a career.

Many Hollywood stars crave the attention they get from their fans and the paparazzi. There is a downside to too much publicity. It's becoming more and more common to hear reports of deranged individuals stalking the stars. Some people with mental disabilities fixate on Hollywood stars and mistakenly belief that they are part of the stars lives, even that they know the star personally.

You can gauge the star power of the Hollywood stars from the fact that in the last Presidential election in US many stars were called upon to rally against George Bush. It is a separate matter that Bush won again and people didn't let the stars detract them from their choice.

Hollywood movie stars make millions of dollars from their fan support and people love to see them any chance they get. Tabloid papers spout lies and trash about the rich and famous, and yet people buy them up like hot cakes. America's obsession with Hollywood doesn't show any signs of slowing down.
