Hendrix; Not Just Another Small College

By: Daniel Z. Kane

Lots of small colleges aspire to be alike. Hendrix, is seems, wants to be different. And, different it is.

In an era when many private colleges in the South are becoming increasingly homogeneous and doctrinaire, Hendrix encourages students to be open to new ideas.

One of the most telling items on the Hendrix website is a statement saying, "...if you think some things just shouldn't be questioned, you might not be happy at Hendrix". Isn't that a refreshing statement for a college to make?

The Odyssey program, which requires students to become engaged in at least three hands-on learning experiences during their undergraduate years, also sets Hendrix apart.

The Hendrix student body totals a little over 1,000. Students come from nine nations and more than 30 U.S. states. Approximately one out of eight students is from a minority background.

Admission is selective. Nearly half of Hendrix students were in the top 10% of their high school class. Their midrange ACT scores are an impressive 25-31.

It's student to faculty ratio is 11 to 1, and virtually all faculty hold PhD's or equivalent degrees.

Hendrix's endowment of more than $190 million is the envy of many colleges its size.

Hendrix is moderately priced in comparison to many colleges its size. And, the actual cost to students is greatly reduced by the availability of financial aid.

Students looking for a small, high quality, Southern college which encourages varying points of view and hands on learning experiences would do well to investigate Hendrix.
