Shaving is by far the most common method of removing unwanted hairs. There are two methods of doing this, with an electric razor, or manually. Whichever method is used, the hairs are removed for a short period of time. Depending on the growth rate, and thickness of hair, this period may be for only a few hours, but may last for several days. For people with dark hair, there may appear a shadow caused by the hairs under the skin. This makes it look like the person needs a shave, even though they are clean shaven.
Shaving with electric razors is the easiest method. The razor is run over the area to be shaved, in all directions. This trims the hair to the level of the skin. For most razors, the skin has to be completely dry for it to work, though some have been designed to work under wet conditions. It is possible to buy drying agents to apply before shaving stops, and this helps to get a good shave. Most people find that they do not get as close a shave with an electric razor as they do with a wet razor.
Wet shaving consists of cutting the hairs off with metal blades close to the skin. When wet shaving it is important to always have a sharp razor. So whether you're using a disposable razor or one with replaceable blades, it is advisable to replace them often. Using a dull blade, not only results in getting a poor shave, but can also cause red patches, blotches, and is much more likely to cause actual damage to the skin in the form of cuts and nicks.
Even with a sharp razor, you will still get the cuts and nicks occasionally, so it is best to be prepared for them. The best way to deal with these is to apply pressure using a clean tissue to stop the bleeding. If the bleeding does not stop immediately, leave a piece of tissue stuck to the cut until it stops.
The process of shaving is quite simple. Some sort of lubricant is applied to the area to be shaved, this could be something simple, such as soap. A better form of lubricant would be a shaving gel, which is specially formulated for the job. This is because it contains moisturisers as well as lubricants to protect the skin. Ensuring that the razor is clean by frequently rinsing it in water, you are now ready to start shaving.
When shaving it is best to move the razor in the direction of hair growth. By trial and error, the amount of pressure, you need to apply is discovered. If too much pressure is applied, then the skin is removed as well as the hair, and if not enough pressure then the hairs remain behind. After every stroke, or every few strokes, if you have fewer hairs, remember to rinse your razor. Continue with this until the full area is completely shaved.
