Vaniqa (
eflornithine HCl) is a prescription cream that can be applied to the facial area to reduce hair growth. Thus making other methods of hair removal more effective. There are no prescription hair removal creams.
There are many restrictions on using Vaniqa:
- It can only be used by women, over the age of twelve
- Only the facial area, but not in the eyes, ears, nose or mouth.
- With anyone suffering from broken skin, or severe acne
- Should be avoided by pregnant women, as no studies have been done concerning any affects to the fetus.
- As a prescription cream, it can only be got legally, from your doctor
Vaniqa is applied directly to the area that is to be treated, and massaged in. This should be done twice a day, and can be done as part of the regular beauty treatments that you normally use. Apply the Vaniqa and allow to dry, before the use of any moisturizer, cosmetics or sunscreen. It should be also be noted that the area shouldn't be washed for at least 4 hours after the application of Vaniqa.
Vaniqa works within the hair follicle itself to reduce hair growth, and works on all skin types, and hair colour. It does this by blocking the enzyme required by the hair to cause growth. This also means that for the treatment to be effective, it needs to be continued for all time. As Vaniqa reduces the hair growth, it needs to be augmented by another form of hair removal. Over time these other methods need to be used less and less. If no discernable change has been noted after a six month period then application of Vaniqa should stop. Usually differences can be noted within 4-6 weeks.
It has been noted in clinical studies that combining Vaniqa and laser hair removal methods have made the laser treatment much more effective. In some cases even achieving 100% permanent hair removal, though this was rare.
As with any medical treatment, there can be side effects. With this cream the side effects that you could suffer are redness, stinging, burning, tingling, acne or rash. These effects are usually very mild, and temporary. If you have more severe side effects then it is recommended that treatment be stopped, and your doctor consulted.
